Garage Door Lubricant
Does your garage door seem louder than you remember?
If the noise has become a nuisance, it may be time to lubricate your garage door parts.
Lubricant helps keep your garage door operating smoothly and quietly. However, it’s not always easy – proper garage door lubrication requires much more than just spraying on some grease and calling it a day.
If your garage door is overdue for some maintenance, call Precision to come take care of it!
Not All Garage Door Lubricants Are Equal
Regular garage door lubrication is essential. It helps prevent excessive squeaking and keeps your parts operating smoothly. That being said, not all types of lubricants are appropriate for use on garage door parts. For example, while WD-40 is great for plenty of tasks – removing excess oil, softening rubber seals, fixing scuff marks, etc. – lubricating garage door parts is not one of them.
Classic Wd-40 can actually reduce the lubrication and draw in more dirt, so it should never be used on garage doors. Instead, use a lubricant with a silicone or lithium base as an alternative.
Lithium-based lubricants work in both extremely high and low temperatures, are resistant to heat and water, and protect metal against rust and corrosion. They also adhere well to metal and are ideal for lubricating metal on metal surfaces. On the downside, they can occasionally cause plastic components to wear out more quickly.
Silicone-based lubricants are made by mixing silicone oil with a thickening agent. They perform well on a wide variety of garage door components, including those made from rubber, plastic, metal, and wood. Silicone lubricants are a little less resistant to high temperatures than lithium-based lubricants, but they’re generally better at repelling moisture.
